The Boss CS-1 Compression Sustainer was the compact replacement to the Roland AS-1. The CS-1 can add huge amounts of compression to the signal and can go so far as to create a volume swell effect at extreme settings.
 
The Level knob controls the volume of the signal, the Attack knob and the Sustain knob controls the level of compression on the signal. The Mode toggle switches between a full range and a treble focused compression.
